NOT ALL THERE This is the place where demons drool over petty rule leaving you all alone while your mind fades and erodes between the thickness of steel and stone. This is the place where sadness stains the looks on our faces and where madness remains in the hearts and minds of the opposite races. This is the place of misery and despair locked down in a cell with nothing to lose and without a single care. This is the place where we are all here ‘cuz we are not all there. INTRODUCTION TO PART ONE q “Greetings from the Graveyard" is a 3 part zine | want to use as tool to awareness about the oppressive struggles that prisoners here security prison (Ely State Prison) have to endure. Hopefully in so doing, it wil aso shed light on the struggles of prisoners al over America. 1 wan o use shis 3 part sine, not only to raise awareness, but also o gain support from sincere, dedicated people and activists on the outs. Itis important that people on both sides of the razor-wire understand the struggles, atrociies, injustices, and oppression that people i prison face. In all honesty, this s & crooked, corrupt, and inhumane system where we ar being warchouscd. There s no rehabilitation in these prisons, no programs, no health care, no love, no support. This entire American Judicial System i foul and corrupt. It s designed 10 oppress the poor and people of color. 1t just a cruel merciless system where racism, viojence, and sadism take place everyday 1 wanted 10 break dhis zine down t0 3 sections,to shed light on 3 different aspects of the prison struggle. This first section is made up entirely of my latest writings. 1 write these pieces to give people 3 clear understanding of how barbaric and primitive this system on the inside s, and how most prisoners assume violent mentalites and predatory ways jus to endure. Violence s glorified, respected, honored, and bragged sbout i this psychopathic environment. There’ really no halthy, productive ey for 8 10 be reformed while living in this sadistic, oppressive environment 1 try 0 shine the sporlight on this type of vilent predatory mentaliy ina couple of these essays, such as *Central PopuLockdown", and “Madness™ 1 wrote those pot a5 an imprisoned radical intellectul, but from the perspective of a convict who once took up the means of violence as a survival mechanism. | want people to see all diflrent sdes and different types of mentalties that we take up as the everyday "norm® in thesc. dungeons, Also, some of these writings were written as "Helease Therapy’ for me. These were instances where I was using the paper and pen as an avenue to elease my frustrations, anger, and stress. This can be seen in essays ike *Writings on the Wall, and *Dear Mr. Correctional Officer” just to name 2 couple 1 want people (o understand that it hard for us 1 rise above this madness and to overcome these violent, predatory incntalites s hard, but s necessary ffwe are t0 hold on to a sense of what’s left of r humanity. It necessary for our communitie, society and humanity. We trly and sierely need outsde support. We need people to getinvolted in ourlives and in our struggles. We need people 10 give us genuine e and support. These warm rays of e v what heep ussane n here, ke o going in here, and keep us alive and human in here. We need peaple to send us ltters, accept our phone call, come visit us, and most importrandly, ciud us books 5o that we can use this time to educate/ recducate ourselves and ibrate our minds. 1 s through books, lteraure, education, and study that we become conscious. Consciousncss s & saviour. 15 what enables w6 rise above this madness and change our ways of thinking from violent, criminalise predatory and unproductive thoughts to a more halthy, honest, wise, productice, and ruthfl outlook on lfe. With this vutlook and a conscious level of thinking, we begin 0 understand on a more clar, truthful and active level. Conscious people don’t do stupid things. Conscious people have a true appreciation and respect for lfe and humanity. This is why I’m always passing out zines and lterature and giving books away to other prisoners in here. This is why I’m always writing zines and literature of
my own: to raise consciousness i the hearts and minds of my fellow prisoners. o, sincerely want for this first zine to help people on the outs to understand what we are going through in these graveyards called prisons. 1 need people to understand why we need help from from the outs and what kind of help we need. Love can conquer hate. Love can help and love can heal. And that’s what we need: love, healing, and support. T want this zine to inspire peopl o start getting involved in our lives and our struggles in real and meaningful ways. Help us help ourselves, because we cannot’ expect the people who imprison us to help us. If you are an activist, get involved in a real struggle. 1f you are not an activist, now is your chance to become one. We need sincere, dedicated, compassionate people to get involved in our plight. ‘As always, my writings are for people on both sides of the walls. In solidarity and with respect, Coyore ABC-Nevada Prison Chapter |y IN JusT US Er-. NOTE FROM MY COMRADE MARCUS To become aware of these atrocities, one must first become introduced to the 3 Ws: World, War, and Warehouses. Once one becomes famillarized with these three, you’ll then find that we are all prisoners with fike struggles. Therefore, we are all subjected to the same institution and its forced mentalities of insane thinking. The relevance of this institution is it needs for us to become reliant upon its mechanisms. Like a clock ticking away and we’re the sprockets turning its gears. It needs us to keep in tune to its tock. For without us, it cannot function. The clock takes extreme measures against all resistance These prison warehouses, for some, is the beginning of its extreme measures; and for others, it s the end. Those on the outs are subjected to wars and fighting for the continuous reign of capitalism. And some are just plainly confined to the world and its oppression, living as puppets till death, finding that in the end, it costs way too much to die. Lives pay dearly for war bullets, while the institution hails on and on. The warehouses destroy human nature with no compassion towards our well- being. And the institution hails on and on, biting its own tail for nourishment. And we come straight from its ass as its substance

There grows an inability to offer fake and fearful smiles to the insulting and petty pigs, to put your chin against your chest and pretend you don’t see, and take it and take it and take it. You develop a sense of dignity and self-worth and none of the fascists’ punishments or threats or sanctions can drive those things out of you. Sean Swain
SOLITARY ENSLAVEMENT 7 ....We sit in these cells like dead bodies sit in cemeteries Death fills our lungs, fills our minds, fills our hearts and fills our souls as it lurks and lingers and seeps through the concrete. Our minds go numb and our spirits fade into inactivity. We sit here waiting to waste away, erode, dissolve, and disappear into the cracks of the cement. Solitary confinement. What an evil concept, what a wicked notion, what a clever way to destroy a man without even laying a finger on him. Solitary confinement -- the murderer of minds, hearts, and souls. The person who designed such an evil conception must’ve had murder on his mind and hate in his heart. We die alone in these cold cells, as our hands stretch out to clutch concrete, but fail miserably to hold anything in their grasp other than the death-stenched air. We die alone -- a lonely, miserable, suffering death. We die alone...... Changing systems is ineffectual not only because an opposite system is still a system but also, most importantly, only the political and economic structures are altered, while the fundamental paradigm - one of control and domination, remains intact. THAT’S WHAT HAPEENS n Your heart turns into stone, your soul turns into ice, and your mind turns into jelly. That’s what happens when you sit and sit and sit in one of these cells, that’s what happens when love leaves you, its what happens when you stop trying. Its a constant cycle of torture. Its a constant battle, a never-ending struggle. One day you feel good, the next day you feel bad. You go through so much conflict and turmoil with yourself, it nearly kills you. You can feel a deep sense of mental anguish and a deep sense of spiritual torment. It hurts so bad, it tears you up into little pieces, it scars you, and it destroys you inside. You’re filled with hate, rage, and vengeance. You want to kick the pigs head in, the same way they kick on your door. You become suspicious of others, and parancid., You begin to think they’re talking about you, you think they’re out to get you, out to rob, steal, or cheat you. You’re losing your fucken mind. That’s what happens when you sit and fester and marinate in one of these cells for hours at a time, days at a time, months at a time, years at a time. That’s what happens when your heart stops finding a real reason to beat, that’s what happens when you quit resisting. Your heart breaks a thousand times, you lose your cool. You lose your mind, your soul freezes and you die inside, you fucken die. My name is Coyote and my heart still beats with love and resistance. THE CASE OF THE CASEWORKERS 2 The caseworkers here at Ely State Prison have become 5o good at lying that it scares me. The Spirit of Resistance Those who live in fear of authority, five in savery. Mental savery, psychological slavery, and even physical slavery. Those who live in fear of authority are in a prison al of their ‘own. A prison of their own making. 1am a prisoner to concrete and steel, but | am not imprisoned by fear. | do not conduct ‘myself with those who are in fear of authority. We who live in prison are sure to not allow the walls to chip away at our existence; but with our spirit and attitude of resistance we chip away the walls and barriers that presume to behold us. The thoughts that seep to the strengthened center of our well-being were created from the sheer will to survive under drastic crcumstances. We are refined by hardships when befriended by darkness and we come out strengthened in the center and sharp around the edges, ready to cut through our bonds with a diligent ease. tis will power that guides us through these soppy situations. It s the spiit of resistance that keeps us alive and well. We are not imprisoned by our fears, we are determined to perservere. €l Coyote ABC - Nevada Prison Chapter June 77, 2008

THERE’S NO LOVE HERE In the depths of these dregs where our souls dwell in darkness as our minds dwindle like dust in the wind, we sit here with sad looks on our faces, waiting for a letter in the mail or a hot meal to be served. Waiting, waiting, waiting, always waiting for something, but it seems like nothing ever comes. Nothing good, anyways. There’s no love here. Not in this artificial world of concrete and steel, surrounded by razor wire, and gun towers, which are enclosed by mountains on all sides. There’s no love in these confinements, just a lot of hate, anger. agony, hopelessness, loneliness and despair. The closest thing you’ll find to love in here, is pain. There’s no love here, no sunshine, no fresh air. But if you open your eyes long enough to see, you will find that there is plenty of destruction, depression, aggression, torment, suffering, and death. The coldness that permeates the atmosphere seeps through our skin to our bones and chills our soul. We’ve been discarded by society, separated from our families, left to sit, suffer, rot, and die. They don’t care, so we don’t care. There’s no love here. Coyote, 2008 Anarchist Black Cross, Nevada Prison Chapter E.S.P.

We train, spar and prepare. There’s no breaks, no time-outs, no tapping out, no quitting, no Biving up. Fight, fight, fight. We fight to change, we fight to rise above the madness, we. fight to make it through. Man-up, handie-up, face up to every challenge and to every challenger. s a mental kumite, it’s a spiritual kumite, it’s an emotional kumite, i’s 3 physical kumite. We fight with God, we fight with the Devi, we fight with our own restless souls, we create enemies and fight them too. We fight with all our hearts and we fight with allour might. Strength, endurance, speed. We fight one battle after the next, we feel no pain, we have no fear, we just keep fighting to persevere. Focus, we. need to focus, we muststay focused, can’t ose our focus. Like an eagle we swoop, ke a tger we strke. We strike back when struck, we swing when swung upon, we initiate and ‘engage and we combatthe battles we lose only to inspire us to comeback and fight harder and harder and harder. Punch, kick, strike. We fight and we struggle and we resist. Everyday s a kumie, step into the arena, step into the ing, step into the dojo, step onto the mat. Come out to the yard, step onto the battlefield. Gladiator, samurai, soldier, kyokushin, warrior, guerrilla, prisoner. Fight! Fight! Fight! €l Coyote BUT UNTIL THEN The mindless minds in these endless times do not want to think, because thinking is too real. The heartless hearts in these lonely, miserable times, do not want to think. We do not want to have to feel or deal with reality or face life, because it’s all too much, it’s all too real. So we nullify, dull, deteriorate, and dumb ourselves down with television, magazines, gangsterism, fantasies and day dreams. We let our minds fade away with our lives, silently hoping and watching for something to come along and shake us, awaken us and snap us back into reality, causing us to take charge of our situation before it’s too late, causing us to take control of our lives, with that long, forgotten fire burning and raging in our hearts and minds once again. We sit and we pray and we hope and we wish that one day, some day, we may reawaken to the passion of life and be able to déal with reality, once again.
But until then, we turn our minds off and our televisions on. We put our books down and pick up magazines full of fakeness and materialism and we sit here and fade away, until a rainy day, fuck the world, we say.... The Writings on the Wall “Fuck the Police”. These 3 words can be found everywhere in these madhouses. Fuck the police, scribed on the wall, fuck the police, scratched into the desks, fuck the police, carved into the bunks, fuck the police, etched into the doors, etched into our minds. Fuck those slimy, greasy bastards, fuck them pigs. That s the frst commandment that we five b i here, the golden rule, as we iv jn these volatie situations, hosiity towards our captors s the fuel that keeps us going. The correctional officers are the police, they work fo the system, the government, s0 they’re pigs too. The rat, the sntches;the informants and the inmates on protective custody, they are the police t00. They work or the man, cooperating and operating against ther prisoners, though they are pisoners themselves. I this world, that makes them the biggest pieces of shits around these sitfilled sewers. ot even the pigs respect them, they re cowards, and they are the polce to0, 5o fuck them. ‘Thisin prison, this isn’t Disneyland. People aren’t playing, not everybody i friendly ‘around here, there are some peaple around here who would stick some steel in your neck, without blinking an eye, then go walk back to the table, sit down and eat their ‘meal, or your meal, like nothing happened. Thisi prison. Fuck the system, that’s what we say when we pray, cuz that’s what we feelin our hearts. We know this ain’t right, we know its foul, we know we’re being screwed, cheated, manipulated and deceived. We know it in our hearts. Fuck the system. ‘Welive with so much hostilty in our hearts,i’s what motivates us to stay alive, but it’s 2 double-edged sword as we continue on the path of SELF-DESTRUCTION cuz we do not truly understand how we can actually rise above this madness, we do not truly ‘comprehend how we can escape these chains and live truthfully. Allwe know i piracy, bandity, hoodlumism, thuggery, and gangsterism, that’s all e Know as we sit here and say fuck the system. We don’t ask ourselves, o each other, how can we organize ourselves in here? We don’task ourselves, o each other, how can we elevate ourseives in here? We don’t ask ourseives, or each other, how can we five truthfuly, how can we get free and rise above this oppression? We don’t think about these things, because we don’t see the possibilty of these things, as we are blinded by ‘our own ignorance and blinded by our own volence towards one another, we can’t see past our own futie situations, all we know i that we have to survive, 5o we don’t get cheated or shorted or knocked off by the next motherfucker.
But the writings on the wall for those who want to read it its right there, etched, sketched, scratched, scribed, carved or written, i’ right there. Three words, fuck the police, it’sright there, written on the wall desk, bunk, ceiling, floor, tsright there. Fables, Leo Tolstay, 182821910 £ Coyote An eagle built a nest on a tres, and hatched out some eaglets, and a wild sow brought her litter under the tree, and the sou rooted around the tree and hunted in the woods, amd when night came she would bring her young something to eat. And the eagle and the sow lived in neighborly fashion. And 2 grimalkin 1aid her plans to destroy the eaglets and the little sucking pigs. She went to the eagle and said: "Eagle you had better not fly very far away. Beware of the sov, she iz planning an evil design. She is going to undermine the roots of the tree. You see she is rooting all the time." Then the grimalkin went to the sow and said: "Sow, you have not a good neighbor. Last evening I heard the cagle saying to her eaglets: "My dear little eaglets, I am going to treat You to a nice little pig. Just as the sow is gone, I will bring Yyou a little young sucking pig:® From that time the eagle ceased to (ly out after prey, and the sou did not go any more into the forrest. The eaglets and the young pigs perished of starvation, and the grim feasted on then. The interests of the State and those of the individual differ fundamentally and are antagonistic. The State and the political and economic institutions that it supports can exist only by fashioning the individual to their particular purpose; training him to respect “law and order”; teaching him obedience, submission, unquestioning faith in the wisdom and Jjustice of government, above all, loyal service and complete self-sacrifice when the State commands it, as in war. The State puts itself and its interests even above the claims of religion and God. It punishes religious or conscientious scruples against individuality because there is no individuality without liberty, and liberty is the greatest menace to authority. Emma Goldman
BEWARE OF THE GRIMALKIN® True seekers of knowledge would probably appreciate the a7t that there is a lot of wisdom and knowledge to be found in fables. Practically every culture has their own fables, there is so much that can be learned from fables, things like strategy, wisdom, practical vays of living, counsel and instructions on various themes of life. How could one not | apereciate a good fable every now and then right? So, I wanted to share this particular fable with you, because there’s a lot °f truth in it, truth that applies to our everyday situation as prisoners. . The strategy of the grimalkin in this fable is very similar o that of the "Divide and Conquer” strategy that our oppressors %o on us today. When we become mistrustful of eachother, when e fiaht eachother and kil eachother, we are giving our operessor (the grimalkin) - our true enemy - absolute power over us. As long as we are going at it with eachother, they 407"t have to worry about us trying to rise up against them. fio can we be eachothers enemy when we are in the same enmunities, prisons and in the trenches together, going throuah the same shit, suffering from the same type of poverty and the sare afflictions together? No, brothers and sisters, ¥e are nct eachothers enemies, we need to stop hating eachother an1 core to reslize that it’s the grimalkin who is profiting “ff of our self-destructive behavior, the grimalkin is our true The sooner ve realize this the sooner we will be able to teach some type of middle-ground between us and eventually we a0 try to come tonether and run the grimalkin down. There’s . ssons that can be learned from this fable of the “Faale and the Sow. But one of the most important one is one o BlAnst, "Wnos your Enemy." coyote, 2006 HAYMARKET Ely State Prison

People screaming day and night, rape and the spread of serious diseases, such as AIDS, hepatitis, venereal diseases and everything else is epidemic, as if deliberately cultured in a Petri dish. Violence, longing, bitterness, hopelessness, self-loathing are coupled with the schooling of criminality. Useful programs, under this madhouse environment, have been gutted. There’s no real rehabilitation, no re-entry programs. They are left to live or die in this minimalist warehouse situation... In Amerikkka, they torture and try to kill the spirit of people, whereas in El Salvador, the U.S-trained authorities were allowed to go all the way - torture and kill and leave the mutilated bodies for the vultures to pick over at the dump sites - just like the U.S. perfected in the Phoenix Program in Vietnam. For, a community cannot live without spirit - without hope of genuine humanity. Anthony Rayson

Nay, it is the silly parading of force. It does not propose Lo win love or make converts, if it puts its finger into anything, it does so in an unfriendly way, for its essence consists not in persuasion, but in command and compulsion. However much pain it may take away, it cannot conceal the fact that it is the legal maimer of our will, the constant negation of our liberty. Even when it commands the good, it makes this valueless by commanding it, for every commands slaps liberty in the face, as soon as the good is commanded, it is transformed into evil in the eyes of the true (that is, human, by no means divine) morality, of the dignity of man, of liberty; for man’s liberty, morality, and dignity consist precisely of doing the good not because he is commanded to but because he recognizes it, wills it, and loves it. But. today s different. s a g00d day today. | am pleased with the things | am seeing today. The good spiits and cheer of thy- convicts around me definately seems to be resonating with me. T is 2 gond day 1o Ive | rarievad 2 letter in the mail st night and its always good to know there are peopis it there who actually care about me, about my Struggles. and situations and about wha’s going on in here. It efinitely a 00d thing to maintain a solid connection with feopie on the outside. Here, where I at, the pickle:suits do not pass ou the mail until gt time, s we. have to wart all day and al night, just to see if we get something or not. s aiways uplifting to our spirts 1o recieve a ltter from someane or a piece of mail. For some of us, s the only thing we have to 100k forward to each day in here, so that’s one of the things that has me feeling real good about ife ight now.
Im also glad to see that other prisoners are on 10p of their game. There’s a guy in the cell a few doors down from me, to my teft, who is doing his work-out routing ight now. | can hear him counting his sets: “one, two, three: ONE. one, two, three, TWO. one, two, three, THREE". There’s another prisoner in the cell a few doors down from me, to my right, who’s working on his case-legal work. Thal’s some hard stuff to figure out. It takes a lot of time, study, and pracice. Its never easy when you’re rying 0 g0 up against a system that owns the law, wries the law, and makes the law. But, we all know those people don’t play fair. There’s aiways gonna be some kind’ve dirt on them, so is always possible o beat them at their own gamel ts definately g00d 10 see people on the grind in here, ts go0d to know that theyre rying. ts g00d to know that they sill have some fight left in them, and its always €00 10 know that they haven’ given up. 29 There are other prisoners all around me, in their cells, who are either exercising, reading, wrting. or who are deep into their studies. One of my neighbors, who | often have study sessions with, was talking to me about different styles of study; how. ‘someone could really get a good study program down if he was truly serious about his studies. He said there are all kinds of things a prisoner can study i he really wants t0 lear something and not only lear, but apply it too. 1 told him 1 feel him on that. There’s a lot o people who read, but don’ really take the time to think about What they read. They dont absorb i, they don’ try to memorize it, and they dont fry 10 apply it They just read to pass the time, which is cool, | guess, because its better to be doing something producive to pass the time than to be on a path of self- destruction, of to even be wastng ticks on a bunch of urelevant nonsense. He saig that he agreed with me and that sometirmes he’ll spend 2-3 hours reflecting on one sentence. He’l take his etymological dictionary out. he’l break out his encyclopedia and other reference materils and he’l ook at the 100t word 10 find out where the word originated from, what it means, and when it came into use. Then, he will just sit back and really think about the entire sentence, 0 see whal was undermeath the. surface. AllI could say 1o that was, "WOW." | definately appreciated his conversation. and that’s another thing that s e feeling good about th day (waa, So far. there hasn’t been any negativity today. nobody yelling or screaming out the side of their doors, calling other prisoner obscene names. Nobody’s tipping on the PIgS and they aren’t gOing out of their way 10 mess with any of us tocas. Cuer: e Psych-patients seem 1o be quiet today. No banging on the desks or kicking or the ‘do0rs - and they haven’t been yelling and screaniing at al today, like they often do. ‘The morale amongst the prisoners on this tie seems to be pretty good. The. conversatons have been productive and uplfting, | can definitely sense that everybody’s feeling pretty g00d about themselves today. Everybody’s oking, laughing and Nobody’s stressing. nobody seems to feel the need to be a tough guy or prove. themseles 1o the next man. There’s a sense of community on the tier today. Greetings from

NOT ALL THERE

This is the place
where demons drool
over petty rule
leaving you all alone
while your mind fades and erodes
between the thickness of steel and stone.

This is the place
where sadness stains
the looks on our faces
and where madness remains
in the hearts and minds of the opposite races.

This is the place
of misery and despair
locked down in a cell
with nothing to lose
and without a single care.
This is the place where we are all here
‘cuz we are not all there.

INTRODUCTION TO PART ONE q

“Greetings from the Graveyard" is a 3 part zine | want to use as tool to
awareness about the oppressive struggles that prisoners here
security prison (Ely State Prison) have to endure. Hopefully in so doing, it wil aso
shed light on the struggles of prisoners al over America. 1 wan o use shis 3 part sine,
not only to raise awareness, but also o gain support from sincere, dedicated people and

activists on the outs.

Itis important that people on both sides of the razor-wire understand the struggles,
atrociies, injustices, and oppression that people i prison face. In all honesty, this s &
crooked, corrupt, and inhumane system where we ar being warchouscd. There s no
rehabilitation in these prisons, no programs, no health care, no love, no support. This
entire American Judicial System i foul and corrupt. It s designed 10 oppress the poor
and people of color. 1t just a cruel merciless system where racism, viojence, and
sadism take place everyday

1 wanted 10 break dhis zine down t0 3 sections,to shed light on 3 different aspects of
the prison struggle. This first section is made up entirely of my latest writings. 1 write
these pieces to give people 3 clear understanding of how barbaric and primitive this
system on the inside s, and how most prisoners assume violent mentalites and
predatory ways jus to endure. Violence s glorified, respected, honored, and bragged
sbout i this psychopathic environment. There' really no halthy, productive ey for
8 10 be reformed while living in this sadistic, oppressive environment

1 try 0 shine the sporlight on this type of vilent predatory mentaliy ina couple of
these essays, such as *Central PopuLockdown", and “Madness™ 1 wrote those pot a5 an
imprisoned radical intellectul, but from the perspective of a convict who once took up
the means of violence as a survival mechanism. | want people to see all diflrent sdes

dungeons,

Also, some of these writings were written as "Helease Therapy’ for me. These were
instances where I was using the paper and pen as an avenue to elease my frustrations,
anger, and stress. This can be seen in essays ike *Writings on the Wall, and *Dear
Mr. Correctional Officer” just to name 2 couple

1 want people (o understand that it hard for us 1 rise above this madness and to
overcome these violent, predatory incntalites s hard, but s necessary ffwe are t0
hold on to a sense of what's left of r humanity. It necessary for our communitie,
society and humanity. We trly and sierely need outsde support. We need people to
getinvolted in ourlives and in our struggles. We need people 10 give us genuine e
and support. These warm rays of e v what heep ussane n here, ke o going in
here, and keep us alive and human in here.

We need peaple to send us ltters, accept our phone call, come visit us, and most
importrandly, ciud us books 5o that we can use this time to educate/ recducate
ourselves and ibrate our minds. 1 s through books, lteraure, education, and study
that we become conscious. Consciousncss s & saviour. 15 what enables w6 rise
above this madness and change our ways of thinking from violent, criminalise
predatory and unproductive thoughts to a more halthy, honest, wise, productice, and
ruthfl outlook on lfe. With this vutlook and a conscious level of thinking, we begin
0 understand on a more clar, truthful and active level. Conscious people don't do

stupid things. Conscious people have a true appreciation and respect for lfe and

humanity. This is why I'm always passing out zines and lterature and giving books
away to other prisoners in here. This is why I'm always writing zines and literature of

my own: to raise consciousness i the hearts and minds of my fellow prisoners.

o, sincerely want for this first zine to help people on the outs to understand what we
are going through in these graveyards called prisons. 1 need people to understand why
we need help from from the outs and what kind of help we need. Love can conquer hate.
Love can help and love can heal. And that's what we need: love, healing, and support.

T want this zine to inspire peopl o start getting involved in our lives and our
struggles in real and meaningful ways. Help us help ourselves, because we cannot’
expect the people who imprison us to help us. If you are an activist, get involved in a
real struggle. 1f you are not an activist, now is your chance to become one. We need
sincere, dedicated, compassionate people to get involved in our plight.

‘As always, my writings are for people on both sides of the walls.

In solidarity and with respect,

NOTE FROM MY COMRADE MARCUS

To become aware of these atrocities, one must first become introduced
to the 3 Ws: World, War, and Warehouses. Once one becomes
famillarized with these three, you'll then find that we are all prisoners
with fike struggles. Therefore, we are all subjected to the same
institution and its forced mentalities of insane thinking. The relevance of
this institution is it needs for us to become reliant upon its mechanisms.
Like a clock ticking away and we're the sprockets turning its gears. It
needs us to keep in tune to its tock. For without us, it cannot function.
The clock takes extreme measures against all resistance

These prison warehouses, for some, is the beginning of its extreme
measures; and for others, it s the end. Those on the outs are subjected
to wars and fighting for the continuous reign of capitalism. And some are
just plainly confined to the world and its oppression, living as puppets till
death, finding that in the end, it costs way too much to die. Lives pay
dearly for war bullets, while the institution hails on and on. The
warehouses destroy human nature with no compassion towards our well-
being. And the institution hails on and on, biting its own tail for
nourishment. And we come straight from its ass as its substance

There grows a kind of intolerance for injustice and
cruelty and malice and capriciousness. There grows an
inability to offer fake and fearful smiles to the insulting
and petty pigs, to put your chin against your chest and
pretend you don’t see, and take it and take it and take it.
You develop a sense of dignity and self-worth and none of
the fascists’ punishments or threats or sanctions can
drive those things out of you.

SOLITARY ENSLAVEMENT 7

....We sit in these cells like dead
bodies sit in cemeteries Death fills
our lungs, fills our minds, fills our
hearts and fills our souls as it lurks
and lingers and seeps through the
concrete. Our minds go numb and our
spirits fade into inactivity. We sit
here waiting to waste away, erode,
dissolve, and disappear into the cracks
of the cement.

Solitary confinement. What an evil
concept, what a wicked notion, what a
clever way to destroy a man without
even laying a finger on him. Solitary
confinement -- the murderer of minds,
hearts, and souls. The person who
designed such an evil conception
must've had murder on his mind and hate
in his heart.

We die alone in these cold cells, as
our hands stretch out to clutch
concrete, but fail miserably to hold
anything in their grasp other than the
death-stenched air. We die alone -- a
lonely, miserable, suffering death. We
die alone......

Changing systems is ineffectual not only because an
opposite system is still a system but also, most
importantly, only the political and economic structures
are altered, while the fundamental paradigm - one of
control and domination, remains intact.

THAT'S WHAT HAPEENS n

Your heart turns into stone, your soul turns into
ice, and your mind turns into jelly. That's what
happens when you sit and sit and sit in one of
these cells, that's what happens when love leaves
you, its what happens when you stop trying. Its a
constant cycle of torture. Its a constant battle,
a never-ending struggle. One day you feel good,
the next day you feel bad. You go through so much
conflict and turmoil with yourself, it nearly kills
you. You can feel a deep sense of mental anguish
and a deep sense of spiritual torment. It hurts so
bad, it tears you up into little pieces, it scars
you, and it destroys you inside.

You're filled with hate, rage, and vengeance.

You want to kick the pigs head in, the same way
they kick on your door. You become suspicious of
others, and parancid., You begin to think they're
talking about you, you think they're out to get
you, out to rob, steal, or cheat you. You're
losing your fucken mind.

That's what happens when you sit and fester and
marinate in one of these cells for hours at a time,
days at a time, months at a time, years at a time.
That's what happens when your heart stops finding a
real reason to beat, that's what happens when you
quit resisting. Your heart breaks a thousand
times, you lose your cool. You lose your mind,
your soul freezes and you die inside, you fucken
die.

My name is Coyote and my heart
still beats with love and
resistance. But there's been times

when it would skip a beat or two, or
three...

THE CASE OF THE CASEWORKERS 2

The caseworkers here at Ely State Prison have
become 5o good at lying that it scares me. They're
always out to give us the classic run around, just to see
us running in circles like a dogs chasing their tails. I've
trained myself not to believe anything they say and
never get my hopes up. | am able to live with the
understanding that there isn't very much | have
coming from them. | know these people don't care
about me, they don't care about my problems in life
or what the hell I'm going through. They're not going
to help me, they're not here for that. These lying
caseworkers are so full of shit, they can keep on
walking past my cell to the next one. I'm cool right
here. Fuck 'em.

The Spirit of Resistance

Those who live in fear of authority, five in savery. Mental savery, psychological slavery,
and even physical slavery. Those who live in fear of authority are in a prison al of their
‘own. A prison of their own making.

1am a prisoner to concrete and steel, but | am not imprisoned by fear. | do not conduct
‘myself with those who are in fear of authority. We who live in prison are sure to not
allow the walls to chip away at our existence; but with our spirit and attitude of
resistance we chip away the walls and barriers that presume to behold us.

The thoughts that seep to the strengthened center of our well-being were created from
the sheer will to survive under drastic crcumstances. We are refined by hardships when
befriended by darkness and we come out strengthened in the center and sharp around

the edges, ready to cut through our bonds with a diligent ease.

tis will power that guides us through these soppy situations. It s the spiit of
resistance that keeps us alive and well. We are not imprisoned by our fears, we are
determined to perservere.

THERE'S NO LOVE HERE

In the depths of these dregs where our souls dwell in
darkness as our minds dwindle like dust in the wind, we sit
here with sad looks on our faces, waiting for a letter in the
mail or a hot meal to be served. Waiting, waiting, waiting,
always waiting for something, but it seems like nothing ever
comes. Nothing good, anyways.

There's no love here. Not in this artificial world of concrete
and steel, surrounded by razor wire, and gun towers, which
are enclosed by mountains on all sides. There's no love in
these confinements, just a lot of hate, anger. agony,
hopelessness, loneliness and despair. The closest thing
you'll find to love in here, is pain.

There's no love here, no sunshine, no fresh air. But if you
open your eyes long enough to see, you will find that there is
plenty of destruction, depression, aggression, torment,
suffering, and death. The coldness that permeates the
atmosphere seeps through our skin to our bones and chills
our soul. We've been discarded by society, separated from
our families, left to sit, suffer, rot, and die. They don't care,
so we don't care. There's no love here.

BUT UNTIL THEN

The mindless minds in these endless times do not
want to think, because thinking is too real. The
heartless hearts in these lonely, miserable times,
do not want to think. We do not want to have to
feel or deal with reality or face life, because
it's all too much, it's all too real.

So we nullify, dull, deteriorate, and dumb
ourselves down with television, magazines,
gangsterism, fantasies and day dreams. We let our
minds fade away with our lives, silently hoping and
watching for something to come along and shake us,
awaken us and snap us back into reality, causing us
to take charge of our situation before it's too
late, causing us to take control of our lives, with
that long, forgotten fire burning and raging in our
hearts and minds once again. We sit and we pray
and we hope and we wish that one day, some day, we
may reawaken to the passion of life and be able to
déal with reality, once again.

But until then, we turn our minds off and our
televisions on. We put our books down and pick up
magazines full of fakeness and materialism and we
sit here and fade away, until a rainy day, fuck the
world, we say....

The Writings on the Wall

“Fuck the Police”. These 3 words can be found everywhere in these madhouses. Fuck
the police, scribed on the wall, fuck the police, scratched into the desks, fuck the
police, carved into the bunks, fuck the police, etched into the doors, etched into our
minds. Fuck those slimy, greasy bastards, fuck them pigs.

That s the frst commandment that we five b i here, the golden rule, as we iv jn
these volatie situations, hosiity towards our captors s the fuel that keeps us going.
The correctional officers are the police, they work fo the system, the government, s0
they're pigs too. The rat, the sntches;the informants and the inmates on protective
custody, they are the police t00. They work or the man, cooperating and operating
against ther prisoners, though they are pisoners themselves. I this world, that makes
them the biggest pieces of shits around these sitfilled sewers. ot even the pigs
respect them, they re cowards, and they are the polce to0, 5o fuck them.

‘Thisin prison, this isn't Disneyland. People aren't playing, not everybody i friendly
‘around here, there are some peaple around here who would stick some steel in your
neck, without blinking an eye, then go walk back to the table, sit down and eat their
‘meal, or your meal, like nothing happened. Thisi prison.

Fuck the system, that's what we say when we pray, cuz that's what we feelin our
hearts. We know this ain't right, we know its foul, we know we're being screwed,
cheated, manipulated and deceived. We know it in our hearts. Fuck the system.

‘Welive with so much hostilty in our hearts,i’s what motivates us to stay alive, but it's
2 double-edged sword as we continue on the path of SELF-DESTRUCTION cuz we do not
truly understand how we can actually rise above this madness, we do not truly
‘comprehend how we can escape these chains and live truthfully.

Allwe know i piracy, bandity, hoodlumism, thuggery, and gangsterism, that's all e
Know as we sit here and say fuck the system. We don't ask ourselves, o each other,
how can we organize ourselves in here? We don'task ourselves, o each other, how can
we elevate ourseives in here? We don't ask ourseives, or each other, how can we five
truthfuly, how can we get free and rise above this oppression? We don't think about
these things, because we don't see the possibilty of these things, as we are blinded by
‘our own ignorance and blinded by our own volence towards one another, we can't see
past our own futie situations, all we know i that we have to survive, 5o we don't get
cheated or shorted or knocked off by the next motherfucker.
But the writings on the wall for those who want to read it its right there, etched,
sketched, scratched, scribed, carved or written, i’ right there. Three words, fuck the
police, it'sright there, written on the wall desk, bunk, ceiling, floor, tsright there.

An eagle built a nest on a tres, and hatched out some
eaglets, and a wild sow brought her litter under the tree, and
the sou rooted around the tree and hunted in the woods, amd
when night came she would bring her young something to eat.
And the eagle and the sow lived in neighborly fashion. And
2 grimalkin 1aid her plans to destroy the eaglets and the little
sucking pigs. She went to the eagle and said: "Eagle you had
better not fly very far away. Beware of the sov, she iz planning
an evil design. She is going to undermine the roots of the
tree. You see she is rooting all the time."

Then the grimalkin went to the sow and said: "Sow, you

From that time the eagle ceased to (ly out after prey,

The interests of the State and those of the
individual differ fundamentally and are antagonistic.
The State and the political and economic institutions
that it supports can exist only by fashioning the
individual to their particular purpose; training him to
respect “law and order”; teaching him obedience,
submission, unquestioning faith in the wisdom and
Jjustice of government, above all, loyal service and
complete self-sacrifice when the State commands it, as in
war. The State puts itself and its interests even above the
claims of religion and God. It punishes religious or
conscientious scruples against individuality because
there is no individuality without liberty, and liberty is
the greatest menace to authority.

BEWARE OF THE GRIMALKIN®
True seekers of knowledge would probably appreciate the

The strategy of the grimalkin in this fable is very similar

fio can we be eachothers enemy when we are in the same
enmunities, prisons and in the trenches together, going
throuah the same shit, suffering from the same type of poverty
and the sare afflictions together? No, brothers and sisters,

‘You. And this s going to be an unsafe environment for both of s,

Thank you. Have a nice day.

Think about these prison environments for a moment.
People screaming day and night, rape and the spread of
serious diseases, such as AIDS, hepatitis, venereal
diseases and everything else is epidemic, as if
deliberately cultured in a Petri dish. Violence, longing,
bitterness, hopelessness, self-loathing are coupled with
the schooling of criminality. Useful programs, under
this madhouse environment, have been gutted. There’s
no real rehabilitation, no re-entry programs. They are
left to live or die in this minimalist warehouse
situation... In Amerikkka, they torture and try to kill the
spirit of people, whereas in El Salvador, the U.S-trained
authorities were allowed to go all the way - torture and
kill and leave the mutilated bodies for the vultures to
pick over at the dump sites - just like the U.S. perfected
in the Phoenix Program in Vietnam. For, a community
cannot live without spirit - without hope of genuine
humanity.

The State is force. Nay, it is the silly parading of
force. It does not propose Lo win love or make converts, if
it puts its finger into anything, it does so in an
unfriendly way, for its essence consists not in persuasion,
but in command and compulsion. However much pain it
may take away, it cannot conceal the fact that it is the
legal maimer of our will, the constant negation of our
liberty. Even when it commands the good, it makes this
valueless by commanding it, for every commands slaps
liberty in the face, as soon as the good is commanded, it
is transformed into evil in the eyes of the true (that is,
human, by no means divine) morality, of the dignity of
man, of liberty; for man’s liberty, morality, and dignity
consist precisely of doing the good not because he is
commanded to but because he recognizes it, wills it, and
loves it.

On Heart

Resistance s in my heart and it stays in my heart. As humans we grow, we develop and

DESPAIR 25

These walls were built with hate and I imagine
that they will be destroyed with hate. In a
sanitarium we live, we struggle, and we die. How do
we overcome this?

They call it ELY STATE PRISON, I call it Ely State

Live in institutions where the air is stale and the

Listen to the sound of dread as it enters your

system, buck the system: words that still ring in
our ears, even though some stopped trying a long
time ago. We don't care any more, and when you stcp
carying, you begin to go numb and your mind
deteriorates, crumbles, fades..

We are the wretched, the little people with broken
souls, holding on to death, refusing to let go.

This is my profane existance as I sit here and try

hate unfolds, and onto a path of destruction I go.

Despair fills the air in here, another day,

STAGNATION 29

Minds evaporate in these prisons, ffe becomes redundant after sitting in these
cells day in and day out. Doing the same thing over and over again, your brain
begins to deteriorate. We are fike water in a pond; there’s no flow in our lives, so
we slowly become stagnant, and just fike stagnant water we build up with all
kinds of bacteria and we becomes poisonous. We need to flow, we need to stay
active, we need to stay productive, or else we become stagnant and poisonous;
we become dull and senseless and our fives become miserable and pointless.
Stagnation is misery and in these conditions, misery is death. Feed your mind,
tune your inteflect, read, study, and leam new things. Apply yoursel, apply the
new knowledge you leam. Grow, develop, create and transcend. Rise above
the dirty pool of stagnant water, breathe, let your mind flow until t develops into a
beautiful mind. a dangerous mind, a briiant mind, a powerful mind. Let your

TODAY IS A GOOD DAY TO LIVE

Siting up in these saltary confinement cells, for years on end. | used to always
weave up and tell myself that today is a g00d day to die. But. today s different. s a
g00d day today. | am pleased with the things | am seeing today. The good spiits
and cheer of thy- convicts around me definately seems to be resonating with me.
T is 2 gond day 1o Ive

| rarievad 2 letter in the mail st night and its always good to know there are peopis
it there who actually care about me, about my Struggles. and situations and about
wha's going on in here. It efinitely a 00d thing to maintain a solid connection with
feopie on the outside.

Here, where I at, the pickle:suits do not pass ou the mail until gt time, s we.
have to wart all day and al night, just to see if we get something or not. s aiways

uplifting to our spirts 1o recieve a ltter from someane or a piece of mail. For some
of us, s the only thing we have to 100k forward to each day in here, so that's one of

the things that has me feeling real good about ife ight now.

Im also glad to see that other prisoners are on 10p of their game. There's a guy in
the cell a few doors down from me, to my teft, who is doing his work-out routing ight
now. | can hear him counting his sets: “one, two, three: ONE. one, two, three, TWO.
one, two, three, THREE". There's another prisoner in the cell a few doors down from
me, to my right, who's working on his case-legal work. Thal's some hard stuff to
figure out. It takes a lot of time, study, and pracice. Its never easy when you're
rying 0 g0 up against a system that owns the law, wries the law, and makes the
law. But, we all know those people don't play fair. There's aiways gonna be some
kind've dirt on them, so is always possible o beat them at their own gamel ts
definately g00d 10 see people on the grind in here, ts go0d to know that theyre
rying. ts g00d to know that they sill have some fight left in them, and its always

There are other prisoners all around me, in their cells, who are either exercising,
reading, wrting. or who are deep into their studies. One of my neighbors, who | often
have study sessions with, was talking to me about different styles of study; how.
‘someone could really get a good study program down if he was truly serious about
his studies. He said there are all kinds of things a prisoner can study i he really
